Commemorative banknote World Expo 2025 Osaka

About the project

In 1600, the Dutch ship De Liefde reached the shores of Japan, beginning 425 years of enduring ties built on trade, knowledge, and innovation.

To mark this milestone, the Netherlands presented a commemorative banknote at Expo 2025 Osaka, created in collaboration with Royal Joh. Enschedé, a company internationally recognised for its expertise in secure, high-quality banknotes.

The design brings centuries of collaboration to life through:

  • Textured waves inspired by the Netherlands Pavilion architecture
  • A registered globe watermark and unique numbering
  • UV-reactive patterns and a security thread
  • A holofoil echoing the Expo theme Common Ground
  • Historical milestones from four centuries of Japan–Netherlands relations

An accompanying Augmented Reality app allows visitors to explore the Pavilion, uncover details of our shared history, and enjoy interactive features.

This banknote is available exclusively as a souvenir at the Netherlands Pavilion during Expo 2025 Osaka. If you secure a banknote for yourself, be sure to scan with the app for the extra details!
