W.A. van Buren Commemorative Banknote
About the project
Forty years after King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands completed the “Eleven cities” skating tour over 200 km’s, as a young man under the name W.A. van Buren, Royal Joh. Enschedé produced this limited-edition commemorative banknote to mark the anniversary.
The front features a portrait of the young Willem-Alexander during the 1986 tour, surrounded by motifs typical to the province of Friesland where the tour is held, and a reference to the turning point in Dokkum. The reverse maps the full route and presents a visual bridge between 1986 and today, with UV-ink details that only appear under alternate light.
Intaglio printing, the technique behind the world’s most secure documents, gives the note its characteristic tactile relief and fine detail.
Limited to 1,986 pieces at €59 each, this collector’s item is available via wavanburen.nl.
